HALLMARKING

A hallmark is useful as it tells us some basic information about the piece of jewellery. It contains information on the purity of the metal, the assay office where it was stamped and if a date letter is present, the year it was hallmarked.

Whilst some items of antique and vintage jewellery, offered for sale by Gingerbelle Gems carry a full UK hallmark, this is not always the case. Historically it wasn't a legal requirement within the UK, to hallmark jewellery. Often we see pieces that are stamped just with metal purity or fineness symbols, particularly those from the art deco era. We will always have our goldsmith check the metal content of these pieces, before offering them for sale.

Gingerbelle Gems offers bespoke pieces, created from unhallmarked antique components. To comply with the 1973 hallmarking act, we have a registered makers mark G&J with the London Assay Office. A full hallmark is applied to our bespoke pieces where required.

Please see Dealers Notice B as provided by the London Assay Office.
